What can we learn from the PISA 2025 results beyond the headlines? And how can we move from national reactions to a broader European conversation about reading literacy?

These questions guided the ELINET PISA Reflections on 1 October 2026. Eighteen participants from seven European countries – from Finland in the north to Cyprus in the south – as well as from Canada came together for an open exchange on how PISA 2025 is being discussed in their respective countries and professional contexts.

The latest PISA results published on September 8th showed a declining trend in reading literacy for most countries. In many countries we have seen strong immediate reactions in the media, among policy makers and literacy stakeholders. Some offer explanations, others suggest solutions for improving literacy, and others question the relevance of the PISA studies.

What are your thoughts? How have the stakeholders in your country reacted to the results?

Ik was gisteren en vandaag een deelnemer bij de start van de European Literacy Coalition. Dit is een heel belangrijk initiatief. Hieronder volgt het  persbericht.

The European Commission is launching the European Literacy Coalition, a new initiative under the Union of Skills and the Action Plan on Basic Skills aimed at improving literacy skills across Europe.

The Coalition will bring together schools, education and training providers, libraries and cultural organisations, associations of teachers, parents and learners, and public authorities. The Coalition’s aim is to share expertise and reinforce cooperation on topics such as early childhood as the foundation for literacy and on the training of literacy professionals.… Read the rest

Ik ben medeoprichter en bestuurslid van Elinet. Elinet was aanwezig op de 24e European Conference on Literacy, Literacy. The Door to a Better World, die van 6 tot 8 juli 2026 plaatsvond in Ljubljana, Slovenië. Voor meer algemene informatie over de conferentie, zie dit eerdere bericht op de Elinet-website.

Elinet organiseerde twee symposia, die goed bezocht en positief geëvalueerd werden. Ik was een van de organisatoren van de Elinet-symposia.

I like to share with you the introduction of the European Literacy Coalition, an interesting and important initiative by the European Commission to strengthen literacy, using a  a broad coalition of experts.
I’m also happy to be invited on behalf of the European Commission to the launch event of the European Literacy Coalition, which will take place at the Royal Flemish Theatre (KVS), Rue de Laeken 146, Brussels, on 22–23 September 2026 and to take part in this initiative.

I’m co-founder and Board member of Elinet. Elinet attended 24th European Conference on Literacy, Literacy. The Door to a Better World, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from July 6 to 8 July 2026. For more general information about the conference, see this earlier post on the Elinet website.

Elinet organized two symposia, which were well attended and evaluated. I was one of the organisers of the Elinet symposia and contributed also a presentation.

De 39e HSN Conferentie Onderwijs Nederlands vindt dit jaar plaats op 20 en 21 november 2026 op de campus Xaverianen van de Hogeschool VIVES in Brugge. Zie de HSN website voor meer informatie. Je kan hier ook alle conferentiebundels van de voorafgaande jaren zien en downloaden. 

Deze jaarlijkse conferentie richt zich op leeromgevingen in Nederland en Vlaanderen en op alle niveaus waarin Nederlands geleerd wordt:

De 38ste HSN-conferentie is succesvol verlopen. Op vrijdag waren er rond de 500 en op zaterdag rond de 300 deelnemers. Voor meer informatie over de HSN zie hier. 

Ik was, in samenwerking met mijn Vlaamse collega Karolien Vertriest, de organisator/ voorzitter van de goed bezochte stroom Digitale geletterdheid en didactiek.

Wij hebben besloten de presentaties en eventuele bijbehorende teksten van onze stroom hier beschikbaar te stellen. Service van de kolomleiders.

De 38ste HSN conferentie zal plaatsvinden op 28 en 29 november 2025  op de Tilburg University

 De conferentie beoogt alle leeromgevingen aan bod te laten komen waarin Nederlands geleerd wordt:

  • basisschool/primair onderwijs;
  • secundair onderwijs/voortgezet onderwijs: alle niveaus (vwo, havo, (v)mbo, resp. aso, bso, kso, tso – alle finaliteiten);
  • hogeschool/universiteit;
  • lerarenopleidingen

Hierbij roepen de organisatoren in Vlaanderen en Nederland docenten, didactici en anderen op om zich als spreker/workshopleider te melden met een inhoudelijk voorstel. Er wordt vooral belang gehecht aan praktijkgerichtheid en aan het vernieuwende karakter van de presentatie. Voor ervaringen uit eigen onderwijspraktijk en bevindingen uit kleinschalig onderzoek bestaat veel belangstelling.

Op 22 en 23 november vond de inmiddels 37ste HSN Conferentie Onderwijs Nederlands plaats aan de Erasmushogeschool in Brussel. Kijk op de website van de conferentie voor het programma. Deze website blijft nog een tijdje bereikbaar.
De HSN stelt de organisatie elk jaar een conferentiebundel samen. De Taalunie biedt alle conferentiebundels en alle afzonderlijke bijdragen aan in een digitaal archief.
