From a international, European, perspective we are very happy for the election of Bernadette Dwyer from Ireland as the new Vice President of the ILA.
I, a long standing IDEC member, have not discussed this yet with the other IDEC members and so write this as a private person, but I’m sure I’m not the only one, who feels this way.

LAI invites proposals for papers, workshops and poster presentations for its 41st annual international conference. The theme of this year’s conference is Perspectives on Literacy: Bringing voices together.
The conference will explore research and practice across a wide range of topics relating to literacy across all educational sectors (early childhood, Primary, Post-Primary, tertiary and educational services).

As President of Spanish Reading and Writting Association (AELE), I am pleased to announce the CALL FOR PAPERS for the upcoming XX European Conference on Literacy 2017 in Madrid, Spain, to be open now to be open until December, 18, 2016.
This edition of European Conference, with the main theme “Working together to encourage equity through literacy communities: a challenge of the 21st. Century“, will be held on July, 3 – 6. Ik ben lid van de IDEC (ook vertegenwoordiger van Nederlands daarin) en Fela (idem). In Augustus was ik op de 3rd Baltic Sea – 17th Nordic Literacy Conference in Turku, Finland. Sinds de jaren ’90 ben ik betrokken bij de International Literacy Association. Ik ben ook de vertegenwoordiger van Nederland in de IDEC (International Development in Europe Committee). Hierin werken 30 Europese landen samen aan het verbeteren van geletterdheid in Europa. Een van de projecten waar IDEC bij betrokken is, is ELINET. Elinet is opgericht in february 2014 en “unifies 77 partner organisations from 28 European countries (including 24 EU member states) engaged in literacy policy-making and reading promotion in Europe”. Elinet heeft een European Declaration of the Right to Literacy ontworpen. Daarover hieronder meer informatie.

One in five 15-year-old Europeans, as well as nearly 75 million adults, lack basic reading and writing skills. Not only does this make it hard for them to find a job, it also increases their risk of poverty and social exclusion.
The European Literacy Policy Network ELINET was initiated to gather and analyze policy information; exchange policy approaches, good practice, and initiatives and raise awareness of the importance of acting now to reduce the number of children, young people and adults with low literacy skills by 2020. ELINET is formed of 79 partner organizations from 28 countries. The network has received funding from the European Commission to complete a two year work program.… Read the rest
As I told you in a recent blogpost I’m also active in the International Development in Europe Committee of the International Reading Association. In the last Reading Today magazine of the IRA there is an article on the one of our activities, the International Leadership Workshop in Ljubljana last januari.

Since the 90ths of the 20th century I am an active member of the International Reading Association I am also the representative of the Netherlands in the International Development in Europe Committee (IDEC), in which over 30 European countries collaborate on literacy in Europe.
